Article 1)  A New School Year Is Here...Will You Get Recruited?

By:  Gary Hawkins

Belive it or not, a new school year is already here.  For high school athletes, a new school year means it's not only the time to start thinking about new classes and old friends, it's time to start thinking about your high school team and how good your team can be this year.

For high school athletes who want to play at the next level, it's also time to start thinking about your athletic future beyond high school and whether or not this is the year you will be recruited for an athletic scholarship.

For a few fortunate athletes, recruitment will happen automatically this year.  For most athletes, however, this year will come and go and they won't get any attention from college colleges and they won't be any closer to their goal of playing in college.

The best news for you?  This year can be different.  This can be the year you step out from the crowd, get noticed and get recruited.  How?  You should already know the answer by now if you have been reading my material for very long....the answer is to simply market and promote yourself to college coaches!

What exactly does market and promote yourself mean?

Market Yourself:  Let College Coaches Know About YOU

Promote Yourself:  Let Those Same Coaches Know How YOU Can Help Their Program.

If you have the ability to play at some level of college athletics, and you are willing to take on the simple task of marketing and promoting yourself...you can play your sport in college.    All you really need is a powerful athletic resume and a personal letter to send out to coaches.  It's just that simple.

Don't let this year come and go...along with your opportunity to play the sport you love at the next level.  Take action now!

Is this your year?

Article 2)  Why Most Online Recruiting Sites Are Nothing But A Scam!

By:  Gary Hawkins

Athletic recruiting and scholarship sites are popping up all over the Internet.  Unfortunately, many of them are nothing more than a money making scam!

Why?  Most of them are nothing more than a low traffic website that posts your picture and some basic information about you...for a fee of course!

They promise that college coaches will be visiting their site and they will learn all about you and then you will be getting calls and letters.  In reality, this just doesn't happen.  Coaches don't visit these sites..in fact, they usually don't even know about them.  Coaches are busy people and they don't surf the web looking for sites that might contain information about an athlete that could possibly play for them.

Don't waste your time and money on a paid online recruiting site.  If it's a free site, then by all means it can't hurt to post your information online.  Otherwise, use your time and energy marking and promoting yourself directly to college coaches...it works!

Article 3)  The Big Lie And How It Hurts You

By: Gary Hawkins

If you have been reading my material for very long you know how upset I get about the "Big Lie" when it comes to athletic recruiting and scholarships.  Just in case you are new around here...here's what the big lie is:

If you are good enough to play in college, you will get recruited.

You most likely know an athlete that has been recruited since the time they got out of diapers it seems.  As you picture that athlete in your mind, think about other athletes you know who are pretty close to that athlete in athleticism or skill, yet they are not being recruited at all.

Now if the athlete who is being recruited by everyone is good enough for a major Division I scholarship, doesn't it make sense that other athletes who are pretty close to him or her in athleticism or skill is good enough to play at a mid-major Division I school, Division II, NAIA or Division III?  Sure it does.

I have seen this very situation happen so many times.  One athlete can't decide which scholarship offer to take, while other athletes who are petty close to that athlete in athleticism and skill can't get noticed by a junior college!  Why does this happen.?  There are many reasons why this happens, but one thing is for sure...it does happen.

If this is happening to you and you just can't get noticed no matter what you do, you only have one solid choice...market and promote yourself.

Once you market and promote yourself, you may also have so many offers to choose from you don't know which one to choose!

4)  Your Best Bet...Combine An Online And Offline Approach To Recruiting

By: Gary Hawkins

One of the best ways to market and promote yourself to college coaches is to combine an offline and online approach to your recruitment.  I guess you could say that you need to combine an old school approach along with a new school approach to give yourself the best chance of being recruited.

Old School:  Market and promote yourself through direct mail.  Develop a powerful resume that you send to college coaches.  Write a personal letter to the coach to introduce yourself and attach your atletic resume.

New School:  Market and promote yourself online.

The best way to market and promote yourself in 2010 may be to combine these two approaches.

Step 1-  Contact coaches directly with a personal letter.  Attach your athletic resume to the letter.

Step 2-  Post video and photos of yourself online and tell the coaches where to find your information online.

By using this method, coaches who have an interest in you after reading your letter and your athletic resume can immediately go online and see your photos and footage of you in action.  This lets the coach get the immediate information he or she wants about you while you are still fresh on their mind.

This online and offline approach is powerful...and it works!
