Division 3 Basketball

Division 3 basketball offers many high school basketball players a shot at playing college basketball.  Basketball at this level is still very competitive, but allows athletes that are not being recruited by the elite schools an opportunity to fulfill their dream of playing at the next level.

The Large Schools

First of all, everyone wants to play at the division 1 level of basketball. Everyone wants to play for a school like Duke, UNC, Connecticut, or Florida. Those schools have the television contracts and dominate the highlights on ESPN during the basketball season. However, not all basketball players have what it takes to play at an elite school or even at any Division I college.

Great Skills And Talent

Many division 3 players are just as talented and skilled as their bigger school rivals, but they lack the size and/or athleticism to play at the highest levels of college basketball. For instance, a center at the Division 3 level is most likely around 6'7", not 7'1". The shooting guard is most likely around 6'2" tall, not 6'6". You get the idea.

As an example, one of the most talented shooting guards I have ever seen play did not make it to the Division 1 level. Why? He was only 5'11" tall. He played Division 3 and ended up having a great career, but if he would have been 6'5" tall instead, he probably would have been a Division 1 athlete.

Consider Your Options To Play At The Next Level

If you find yourself in the position of being a highly talented and skilled player, yet no Division I schools are knocking at your door and waiving a scholarship offer in your face, it may be time to consider division 3. These schools offer great competition, a chance to travel and play, and a great education.

Summary

If you have an interest in playing division 3 basketball, start making contact with coaches right now. You need to develop an athletic resume and sent it with a personal letter to the coaches of the schools you have an interest in playing for. Many of these coaches will be glad to hear from you if they feel you have what it takes to play for them.
