The level of competition in college level is very high. You should get out and attend some college meets to see the intensity of athletics at this level. Only the most talented runners out of high school will be approached by colleges with offers.  There are 302 division I and 223 division II colleges that offer college cross country scholarships.  The numbers of schools available is a little different for men and women.   The competition for these limited scholarships is very high

Colleges Need Good Athletes

The stiff competition doesn't mean your dream of a cross country scholarship can not happen for you. There are many schools out there who would love to have you on their roster if they only knew about you and your talent and skills. Many coaches don't have a huge recruiting budget to go out and find all the best runners from across the country or even the world. They rely on finding out about runners through various other free avenues.

Your Opportunity

The needs of these coaches creates a big opportunity for you. If you can develop a good athletic resume and start making contact with these coaches, your chances of getting a cross country scholarship goes up dramatically.

Many of these coaches would love to hear from you if you have what it takes to compete at their level.. Don't believe the myth that if you are good enough to run in college, the coaches will automatically find you and offer you a cross country scholarship. Sometimes you have to give them a little help to find you!
