1- Know what your high school coach is doing. You need to know if you coach is helping you at all to be recruited, or if he or she is like most coaches, not doing a thing to help you. Don't be embarrassed to ask him or her directly if they are giving you any help.
2- Get an early start. Don't wait until your high school playing days are over until you think about making contact with college coaches. You need to start making contact your sophomore, or at the latest, junior season.
3- Get out and see some games. Go see some college games in your area and watch games at all levels from Division 1 to Division 3. You need to do an honest assessment of your size and skills and know what level of basketball is right for you.
4- Promote and market yourself. You need to be your best promoter. Develop an athletic resume and start making contact with coaches. Let them know about you and let them know when they can see you play and how to get film of you in action.
